Sin Is Still A Killer

Text: James 1:13-15

Intro: Sin is being replaced by disease, mistakes, weakness, etc in the Christian ranks. No longer are we responsible for our actions but the blame has shifted to our parents, our friends, the devil and a myriad of other people and things.

Sin is no longer a personal, one on one battle or problem with disobedience, rebellion and outright iniquity against God.

From the beginning of the Bible disobedience to God’s word leads to separation and death. From our first parents Adam and Eve until now sin, iniquity, rebellion, disobedience and wickedness has abounded and overcame man.

With the advent of Jesus Christ, the shed blood and his resurrection came hope and help for this deadly problem. However, in our society people are choosing sin over a Savior and hell over hope.

Who hate the good and love the evil. Micah 3:2

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Man was created perfect, and innocent.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen. 2:7

Satan was created perfect and innocent.
Thou was perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. Ezekiel 28:15

Man fell through disobedience to the Word of God. God said that they were not to partake of the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. If they did they would die that day.

1st Point

The Word of God should hold the preimenent place in our hearts today.

All Scripture is given by the inspiration of God.

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by ever word which proceedeth out of the Mouth of God.

Job said I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

David said they are more desired than gold, and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.

Jesus said the words I speak unto you they are spirit and they are life.

2nd Point

The Bible declares the Word of God is God-breathed or inspired.

That Holy Men of God spoke as they were moved on or moved along by the Holy Ghost.

That the Word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than a twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Word of God is eternal, inerrant, and infallible in its oringnal writing and language.

Isaiah says the Word of God will stand forever.

David said forever O God thy Word is settled.

Jesus said not one jot or tittle shall fail or pass away until all his fulfilled.

Peter said the Word of God endureth forever.

Matthew 24:35 says Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall never pass away.

In the last days the Bible will be discarded, set aside, forgotten.

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
[12] And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

3rd Point

Man’s failure in the garden opened up all men to sin and its deadly devices and spiritual death.

Paul in Romans 5 stated, Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned.

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Paul said we who were dead in trespasses and sins.

Job 22:5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite

King David said, Behold I was shapen in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me. He also said, they are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy, there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Jer. 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it.

Mt. 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.[19] For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

Isaiah gives us a picture of what sin looks like in man. The whole head is sick, and the whole heart is faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. Isaiah 1:5,6

4th Point

The power of Sin in our life is great. Sin keeps us from God, away from the presence of God, away from the word of God. Sin defeats, destroys and deadens your conscience and heart.

Having their conscience seared with a hot iron. I Tim 4:2

Psa. 38:4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

In Genesis chapter 3 we read that God drove out Adam and Eve from the garden.

In Genesis chapter 6 we read that God said my spirit will not always strive with flesh.

Proverbs 5:22 reads, His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

Romans says the wages of sin is death.

John said the thief cometh not but for to steal, kill and destroy.

James says when sin is finished it bringeth forth death.

5th Point

How does sin begin its deadly work in our life. What causes me to sin. What are the steps.

We already realize that we have a sinful nature. A nature that is at war with God, with his Word with Him. We call this a carnal nature or sensual nature.

James called this nature, earthly, sensual, devilish.

Jude called it sensual, not having the spirit.

Define sensual. Desire, lust, pleasure. Foolish, unwise. Lower or bestial nature. Animalistic.

Solomon said the little foxes spoil the vines. The little things in life, the small things they do the greatest damage.

The little tongue. The little lie. The little idol. The little drink. The little needle. All led to a big problem. History is replete with little things destroying great men.

6th Point

Let’s take a look at our text tonight and find out how sin works in our life.

Verse 13 says let no man say when he is tempted that God is the one tempting him.

The same that means an enticement to evil is also used to speak of a trial. The difference is how you respond to it. Every trial has the potential to become a temptation, depending on your response.

God cannot be tempted with evil. It literally means in the greek that God is inexperienced with evil. This word apeirastos is only used here in the New Testament.

God is not the cause of our temptation that leads to sin. God does not cause us to sin.

Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the Serpent. Placing the Blame is an old idea.

Robert Burns the famous Scottish poet, wrote, “Thou knowest thou hast formed me with passions wild and strong, and listening to their witching voice has often led me wrong.”

The foolishness of man perverts his way and his heart fretteth against the Lord. Pro. 19:3

Philo: When the min has sinned and removed itself far from virtue, it lays the blame on divine causes.

Habakkuk 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity.

God cannot lie, fail, change, or become evil. God is God. God is holy the opposite of sin.

Leviticus 19:2 The Lord is holy
Leviticus 20:26 The Lord is holy
Isaiah 6 Holy, Holy, Holy
1Peter 1:16 The Lord is Holy

Holiness cannot be penetrated by sin.

7th Point

Verse 14 But every man is tempted—or literally, hekastos, every one or each one, but each one, each individual is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed.

Temptation comes to every one, but not from God but from our own lust.

Drawn away, or dragged away and enticed.

Drawn away is a hunting term. A trap is baited and the animal is lured into the trap. The verb itself, helkomi means to be drawn by an inward power. It means to be led, to be compelled, to be impelled, to be lured into a trap, to be baited and caught.

Enticed is a fishing term. The word litarally means to capture or catch, and its literal use was to catch a fish with bait, to bait a hook and catch. In 2 Peter 2:14, 18 it is translated, to allure, to beguile, deleazo sominos, it means to entice, to catch a fish with bait.

8th Point

His own lust: Each person has his own particular bent of lust which is really the thing that lures him to the bait. We all have certain characteristics of our lust that make some baited traps or baited hooks more alluring, or enticing to us.

Each person has certain weaknesses, certain areas of their life where they are more vulnerable to temptation. All of life works together to make us who we are, are who we are not.

Lust: is epithumia, the core word is thumos, the preposition is added to it. It means the desire of the soul. It’s the strong passion of the soul. Desire or lust is a strong driver in our lives.

Can a man take fire in his bosom and not be burned. Can he walk on hot coals and not be blistered.

Lust feels like love, acts like love, but it is not love, its just selfish desire being fulfilled at the expense of another. Lust never lasts, it never satisfies, that why the more you have the more you want.

The eye is never satisfied and hell is never full.

Our problem is not God, Satan, demons, the world, wicked men. Jesus was surrounded by all of these and yet was without sin.

Our problem is our own lust. The problem is us. The devil didn’t make us do it.

The problem is not the tempter without, the problem is the traitor within.

We have met the enemy and the enemy is us. pogo

Our human nature is to desire things that satisfy. We will do anything to quench desire. The cost is never to great, the risk never to large.

Eve: And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that is was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise,

Achan: When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them,

David: and from the roof he saw woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon, and David sent and inquired after the woman,…

Good, pleasant, goodly, beautiful all words that speak to the appeal, the allure of these objects.

9th Point

When Lust has conceived: Sin in not an act but the result of a process:

There are many steps, days, plans and preparations that ultimately lead to this killer called sin. Once sin is set in motion then the wheel turns freely and often.

Conceived literally means to become pregnant. sullambano

Eve– she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat ——it was now in her body

Achan–and took them, ———they were now in his possession —–and behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of the tent, and the silver under it.

David—and took her and she came in unto him, and he lay with her,———it was now apart of him forever—— and the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

10th Point

It bringeth forth sin: it means to give birth. Tikto

Eve: and the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons. And Adam and Eve hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

Achan: and behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

David: And David sent to Joab, saying Send me Uriah the Hittite. And David wrote a lette to Joab and said, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten and die.

11th Point

And When sin is Finished: apakoua means to cease to be pregnant. When sin does give birth, it brings forth sin and when sin is finished it brings forth death.

What does it bring forth? When sin is born, it is born a murderer.

Sin is a Killer:

Sin will always create a killer, a serial killer in your life. The killer sin will destroy everything in its wake. This baby will keep growing and growing and growing.

Eve: Cursed, separated from God, spiritual death. I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception, in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

6000 years later her sin is still causing pain and punishment for the human race.

Achan: And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them unto the valley of Achor. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire.

David: Child from adultery died. David bore consequences the rest of his life. Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of the sun. For thou didst it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went into his fathers concubines in the sight of all Israel. 2 Samuel 16:22

You can’t hide your sin. It will be exposed either now or later.

Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Heb. 4:13

Psa. 90:8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

Be sure your sin will find you out. Numbers 32:23

12th Point

Sin is a Killer and No Killer will get into Heaven:

I Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
[10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

But the fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone; Rev. 21:8

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie; Rev. 21:27

For without the gates of the city are: dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. 22:14,15

13th Point

There is Hope if You will Confess and Forsake your Sins:

Psa. 130:3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Pro. 28:13

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

14th Point

How Are We Forgiven For Our Sins:

For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Mt. 26:28

Rom. 5:8But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Eph.1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Eph.4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Col.1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Col. 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Psa. 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin. Isaiah 53:10

He was wounded for our transgression, he was bruised for our iniquities. Isa. 53:5

Ps. 51:9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

Psa. 65:3 Iniquities prevail against me: as for our transgressions, thou shalt purge them away.

As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgression from us. Ps. 103:12

He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:19

For thou hast cast all my sins behind my back. Isaiah 38:17
Psa. 103:3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
Jer. 33:8And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.
Acts.3;26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Rom.4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Heb.8:12For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
Heb.10:17And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Psa. 85:2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.
Psa. 32:1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

15th Point

The Right Response To Sin:

You must hate sin, avoid sin, run from sin, quit sin.

Solomon the wisest man said, Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, pass away. 4:15

Paul said to, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” 1Thess. 5:22

In Corinthians we are admonished to, “be not unequally yoked, have no communion with, no agreement with, to separate and come out from among them and to touch not the unclean thing.” I1 Cor. 6:14-18

Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. I1 Cor. 7:1
Pss.97:10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
Prov.8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Psa. 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

Psa. 139:21Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

Psa. 119:114 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Amos 5:15 Hate the evil, and love the good,…

3 John 1:11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

16th Point

Sin is always a killer. Sin will always destroy. Sin never changes it’s desire, but its designs, methods, devices are constantly being improved and updated.

You will never rid sin without the Word of God.

You will need the Power of the Holy Ghost.

You will need a Commitment to Please God.
